Madrid's Vision for Agentic Cities

At the Smart City Symposium in Berkane, I shared the stage with Juan Corro, CIO of the City of Madrid, to explore the emerging concept of agentic cities - where urban systems become autonomous, intelligent agents that can perceive, reason, and act on their environment.

Madrid, in partnership with IBM, is currently piloting smart city solutions built on the Garnet Framework. Their initial implementation focuses on monitoring wind speed and environmental data to regulate the city's fountains - a practical first step in smarter urban management. The platform is designed to eventually monitor over 5 million georeferenced assets across the city.

During the session, Juan shared an inspiring vision for the future: agentic cities, where urban systems could become more autonomous and responsive while maintaining interoperability through open standards. While this vision is still evolving, the foundation being laid today with standardized digital twins and interoperable systems will be crucial for these future developments.

The Garnet Framework's approach to maintaining stateful agents and standardized data models positions it well to support both current smart city implementations and future explorations of agentic systems.
